There are approximately 1,300 active volcanoes in the world, with the majority located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of intense tectonic activity that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Active volcanoes are classified as those that have erupted in the past 10,000 years and are likely to erupt again in the future.
